Norin Arshed is Professor and Chair of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Strathclyde, where she also serves as Director of Research for the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship, Strategy and Innovation. She joined the university in August 2023 and has established herself as a leading scholar in enterprise policy, entrepreneurship, and institutional theory.
Her research interests center on entrepreneurship policy, particularly women’s enterprise, unconventional entrepreneurship, scale-ups, and the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Drawing on institutional theory, her work investigates how entrepreneurs and SMEs interact with policy initiatives and how contextual factors shape entrepreneurial outcomes. She has led multiple high-impact research projects funded by ESRC, British Academy, Scottish Government, and the Leverhulme Trust.
The trends in her recent publications reveal a strong focus on gender equity in entrepreneurship, policy implementation, and the social dimensions of enterprise. Her work bridges academic research and real-world policy, with a particular emphasis on marginalized groups such as women in business and ex-offenders. She frequently contributes to public discourse through media engagement and policy briefings.

Norin Arshed has held significant advisory roles, including as an Independent Government Advisor to the Scottish Government (2019–2021) and a subject expert for the UK’s Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (2020–2023). She is actively involved in research leadership as a member of the Council of the Society of Advanced Management Studies, advisory board member for Innovation Caucus (ESRC and Innovate UK), and Research Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at 89Initiative, a think tank created by the London School of Economics. Her current projects include "Cultivating entrepreneurship for women leaving the criminal justice system" and "Making motherhood work: Supporting mothers in academia", reflecting her commitment to inclusive and socially impactful research.
Norin Arshed leads a dynamic research agenda with strong external collaborations and a focus on translating research into policy and practice. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to gender equality, decent work, and reduced inequalities.
