Professor Dilani Jayawarna is a Professor of Entrepreneurship at the University of Liverpool Management School (ULMS). She holds prominent editorial roles, including Consulting Editor for the International Small Business Journal and Co-Editor for Entrepreneurship and Regional Development. Her academic career includes a PhD in Technology Management from Manchester Business School and prior roles at Manchester Metropolitan University Business School. She chairs the ESRC Peer Review Committee and serves as an External Examiner for doctoral programs at Lancaster University and others.
Her research focuses on entrepreneurship and small business management, particularly entrepreneurial life courses, resource dynamics in start-ups, and hybrid entrepreneurship. Key projects include studying bootstrapping strategies for social enterprises and the intersectional impacts of the pandemic on women entrepreneurs. She has received best paper awards at BAM and ISBE conferences and recognition for her editorial contributions.
Teaching responsibilities include coordinating quantitative methods modules for MSc and MRes programs at ULMS. She supervises PhD theses on topics such as emancipatory entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial team dynamics. Professional activities span editorial leadership, policy advisory roles, and mentoring early-career researchers through NARTI initiatives.
Her work integrates life course theory with entrepreneurship, emphasizing gendered household dynamics and institutional factors influencing entrepreneurial decisions. Collaborations with Professors Ossie Jones and Julia Rouse have driven policy-relevant research on hybrid entrepreneurship and exit strategies.
