Niall MacKenzie is Professor and Head of the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship, Strategy and Innovation at the Strathclyde Business School, University of Strathclyde, a role he resumed in August 2024. He previously held a personal chair at the University of Glasgow, where he also earned his MA, MPhil, and PhD in Economic History. He has held academic positions at the universities of Glasgow, Cambridge, Wales, and Strathclyde. He is Co-Editor in Chief of Business History, a Research Associate at the Centre for Business Research, University of Cambridge, and an assessor for UKRI's Future Leaders Programme.

His research focuses on business history, entrepreneurship, and regional development, with empirical studies on industries such as Scotch whisky, aluminium, and early-stage risk investment. He explores enterprise policy, technology commercialisation, and family business, often in collaboration with the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise, Nesta, and the Institute for Family Business. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to economic growth and innovation.
The 15 most recent publications reveal a strong trend in historical and systems-based analysis of entrepreneurial ecosystems, with recurring themes in industry evolution, innovation policy, SME finance, and regional economic resilience. His work bridges historical insight with contemporary policy relevance, particularly in Scottish and UK contexts.

MacKenzie has secured over £10 million in research funding, with more than £1.5 million as principal investigator since 2012, including grants from EC Horizon 2020 (twice), the British Academy, UKRI, Scottish Government, and private sector partners. He advises government and non-profits through commissioned reports and knowledge exchange. He currently leads the project Where angels tread, examining the impact of angel investment in Scotland.
He is affiliated with the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship and collaborates extensively with the Centre for Business Research at Cambridge. His professional activities include editorial leadership, peer review, public engagement, and policy advisory roles.
