Dr. Kahrs' research examines intersections between twentieth- and twenty-first century musics, audio technologies, and hearing theories. His current work analyzes how American experimental music, French spectral music, global sound art, and electroacoustic repertoires renegotiate tonality's relationship to acoustics and perceptual science. His scholarship appears in Music Theory Online, Tempo, and Mitteilungen der Paul Sacher Stiftung, with presentations at Society for Music Theory (SMT) and American Musicological Society conferences.
He actively contributes to academic service as cochair of SMT's Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group and editorial board member for the Journal of Mathematics and Music.
