John Cuciurean is an Associate Professor of Music Theory at the Don Wright Faculty of Music, Western University. He previously held faculty positions at Arizona State University and Florida International University. His research focuses on post-tonal music, particularly the works of György Ligeti, transformational theory, intertextuality, and mathematical modeling of musical systems.

Dr. Cuciurean’s research integrates spatial voice-leading analysis, harmonic design, and aesthetic function in Ligeti’s compositions. He has also explored sonata theory and progressive rock analysis. His work has been supported by the Paul Sacher Stiftung and SSHRC.
Recent publications include studies on Ligeti’s sketch materials and contributions to Contemporary Music Review and Journal of Music Theory. His 1997 co-authored paper on hyperscales remains influential in scale theory.
Research grants include support from the Paul Sacher Stiftung and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) for his Ligeti monograph project.
