Benjamin Levy is an Associate Professor of Music Theory and Vice Chair at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). His research focuses on contemporary music, particularly the works of György Ligeti and other avant-garde composers who prioritize texture and timbre as structural elements. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland and a bachelor’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis.
His work includes a book on Ligeti’s stylistic evolution (Oxford University Press, 2017), essays published by PFAU Verlag and Pendragon Press, and ongoing translation/editing of the Schoenberg-Webern Correspondence for Oxford’s Schoenberg in Words series. Dr. Levy has taught at Arizona State University, Towson University, and the Peabody Conservatory.
