Mikel Kuehn is a Professor of Composition at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, and Director of EMuSE (Electroacoustic Music Studios @ Eastman). He holds a PhD from Eastman (1995) and has been a pivotal figure in merging traditional composition with cutting-edge technology. His career includes 25 years as a Professor of Creative Arts Excellence at Bowling Green State University, where he directed the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music and the Bowling Green New Music Festival.
Education: B.A. Jazz Composition (University of North Texas), M.A. and Ph.D. in Composition (Eastman School of Music).
Research interests focus on electroacoustic music, spatial sound design, and the interplay of acoustic and electronic elements. He emphasizes meticulous craftsmanship in sonic detail, inspired by artists like Bartók, Schoenberg, and Stravinsky. Under his leadership, EMuSE is developing an immersive audio dome with 24 speakers, enhancing spatial acoustic experiences.
Upcoming events include a Faculty Artist Series concert (February 4, 2025) featuring his compositions for strings, winds, and 12 saxophones with electronics. Collaborations with guest composers like Ludger Brümmer (March 6, 2025) and Andrew Lewis (April 14, 2025) highlight EMuSE’s exploration of AI-driven soundscapes and spatial acoustics.
Personal history: Grew up in a musical family, with parents David and Susan (both Eastman alumni). Returned to Rochester in 1989 as a graduate student, later marrying soprano Deborah Norin Kuehn. His work bridges generational innovation while honoring musical tradition.
