Solungga Liu is a Professor of Piano and Coordinator of the Keyboard Area at Bowling Green State University's College of Musical Arts. She holds a PhD in Piano Performance from the Eastman School of Music, studying under Alan Feinberg, Douglas Humpherys, and Elizabeth DiFelice. Her expertise spans classical repertoire, early 20th-century American music, and contemporary compositions. Liu is noted for her world premiere performances of lost works, including Charles Griffes' 1915 transcription of Debussy's Les parfums de la nuit, praised for its 'orchestral spectrum of colors.'
Her research interests focus on revitalizing neglected American composers like Charles Griffes and Amy Beach, while also championing living composers such as Stephen Hartke, Aaron Jay Kernis, and Gregory Mertl. She has collaborated with orchestras including the National Theater Symphony Orchestra of Brazil, Toledo Symphony Orchestra, and Alarm Will Sound ensemble.
Liu maintains an active international career with performances at Carnegie Hall, Taiwan's National Concert Hall, and Brazil's Cultural Center. She serves as an artist-teacher at festivals like the Sicily International Piano Festival and the Lied Center Summer Piano Academy. Her discography includes recordings for Centaur, Bridge, and Beauport Classical labels, emphasizing underrepresented repertoire.
Her pedagogical contributions include mentoring students through BGSU's MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music and developing innovative teaching methods for contemporary piano techniques. Current projects include a multi-year collaboration with composer Stephen Hartke to record his complete solo piano works.
