Brian Penkrot serves as an Instructor at Northern Illinois University's School of Music within the College of Visual and Performing Arts, maintaining additional teaching appointments at North Park University and Columbia College in Chicago.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa where he led the Society for Composers chapter. Penkrot's creative scholarship focuses on contemporary composition that interrogates the boundaries between music and noise through perspective and transformation, drawing from both mythical narratives and scientific concepts of reality.
His compositions have been performed internationally by ensembles including the International Contemporary Ensemble and JACK Quartet, with notable recognition including a 2014 Paul Sacher Stiftung fellowship for research on Gerard Grisey's manuscripts. Penkrot is currently conducting a comprehensive analysis of Grisey's seminal spectral work Les Espaces Acoustiques.
