Nicolas Petit serves as a Visiting Professor in the European Legal Studies Department at the College of Europe in Bruges and holds the Joint Chair in Competition Law at the European University Institute (EUI) and Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS). He is currently on special leave from the University of Liege, where he has been a full Professor since 2007 and earned his PhD.
His academic background includes a PhD from the University of Liege and participation in Harvard Law School’s Visiting Researchers Programme in 2005.
Professor Petit’s research specializes in Competition Law and European Union Law, with pioneering work at the intersection of Law and Economics. He is internationally recognized for contributions to digital markets regulation and serves as a member of the European Commission High Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence since 2017, shaping policy on AI governance.
His distinguished recognition includes:
- Prize for the best law book of the year at the Constitutional Court in France (awarded for "Droit européen de la concurrence")
Prior to his current academic roles, he served as a part-time judge with the Belgian competition authority and practiced law at a leading US firm in Brussels, blending theoretical expertise with real-world regulatory experience.
