Professor Morag McDonald is a Professor of Ecology and Catchment Management at Bangor University's School of Environmental and Natural Sciences, serving as Dean of College and Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (Diversity and Inclusion). Her research focuses on soil conservation, forest ecosystems, and agroforestry systems, with a particular emphasis on tropical dry forests and climate change adaptation. She holds certifications including Practitioner of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (PIEMA) and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
Education: B.Sc. Hons in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (Newcastle University), Ph.D. in Forestry (Edinburgh University). She has conducted postdoctoral research at the University of British Columbia and has held visiting roles at institutions in Costa Rica and Jamaica.
Research interests include forest restoration, nutrient cycling, and Indigenous knowledge integration. Her work spans projects in Nepal, Ghana, Uganda, and the Philippines, addressing sustainable land use and biodiversity conservation. Key grants include leadership roles in EU-funded initiatives like the SUTROFOR program and the Global Innovation Initiative for Southeast Asian mine reclamation.
Major awards include the 4th World Congress on Agroforestry Best Poster Award (2019). She supervises diverse PhD topics such as natural flood management in Wales and community energy projects in Scotland/Wales. Current affiliations include the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission.
