Dr. Mark Rayment is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Environmental and Natural Sciences at Bangor University, where he has served since 2008. He is the Course Director for several MSc programs, including MSc Agroforestry & Food Security, MSc Environmental Forestry, and MSc SUTROFOR (Sustainable Tropical Forestry). His teaching spans silviculture, forestry inventory, environmental biophysics, and agroforestry systems. He is actively involved in PhD supervision and module coordination across undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
Dr. Rayment holds a PhD in Forestry from the University of Edinburgh (1998), an MSc in Crop Production from the University of Essex (1992), and a BSc in Horticulture from Bath University (1991). Prior to joining Bangor, he conducted postdoctoral research on carbon fluxes in boreal, Mediterranean, and coniferous forests in Canada, Portugal, and northern England, before a brief hiatus from academia for family and consultancy work.
His research focuses on silviculture, agroforestry, food security, ecosystem services, carbon dynamics, and environmental biophysics. He has led and contributed to significant research projects on peatland greenhouse gas emissions, mangrove rehabilitation, and land-use impacts in upland Wales. His work integrates field measurements, biophysical modelling, and policy-relevant assessments of ecosystem services.
His recent publications, including high-impact papers in Nature and Ecosystem Services, reflect a strong trend in quantifying environmental impacts of land management, particularly in forests and peatlands. Key themes include carbon fluxes, water table control in peatlands, mangrove afforestation outcomes, and the trade-offs between land sparing and land sharing in agricultural landscapes.
Dr. Rayment has supervised numerous PhD students on diverse topics such as shelterbelts for livestock, agroforestry in East Africa, mangrove tipping points, and ecosystem service delivery in Wales. He has secured funding from sources such as KESS, NERC, TET Fund, and CSC China. His research projects include the Forest Fruit and Rural Nutrition (FFARN) program, GHG emissions from lowland peats, and quantifying carbon losses in mangroves.
He is actively engaged in promoting sustainable forestry through international collaboration, including delivering presentations on distance learning at the Forestry Research Institute of Ghana. His work contributes to global sustainability goals, particularly in food security, climate action, and responsible land use.
