German Vargas Gutierrez is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Forest Ecosystems & Society at Oregon State University's College of Forestry. His research focuses on forest responses to global environmental change, combining field studies, physiological measurements, and mechanistic modeling. He holds a joint appointment with the Botany department and teaches courses in Forest Biology and Environmental Plant Physiology.
Education:
- Ph.D. 2021, Plant Biology, University of Minnesota
- Lic. 2016, Natural Resources Management, National University of Costa Rica
- B.Sc. 2013, Tropical Biology, National University of Costa Rica
His research interests span tropical and temperate ecosystems, with emphasis on ecophysiological resilience, climate change impacts, and ecological forecasting. Current projects investigate tropical forest resistance to storms, drought effects on temperate forests, and species migration dynamics under climate change.
Publication Trends: Recent work highlights drought sensitivity mechanisms in tropical plants, liana-forest competition dynamics, and microclimate impacts in dry forests. His studies frequently integrate experimental manipulations (e.g., throughfall exclusion) with large-scale observational networks.
Lab & Collaborations: Leads the Forest Ecophysiology Lab, collaborating widely on projects funded by NSF and USDA. Current initiatives include ecosystem resilience quantification and phosphorus limitation studies in tropical dry forests.
