Monica Barratt is an Associate Professor in the Criminology and Justice Studies department at RMIT University's School of Global, Urban and Social Studies (GUSS). She co-leads the Community Wellbeing cluster at RMIT's Social Equity Research Centre and is affiliated with the Digital Ethnography Research Centre. Her research focuses on emerging drug trends, harm reduction strategies, and ethical methodologies for studying stigmatized populations. She holds an adjunct appointment at UNSW's National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre.
Her work includes leading the Global Drug Survey, the world's largest survey of drug users, and directing Bluelight.org, a harm reduction platform. She contributes to The Loop Australia's drug checking initiatives. Her research emphasizes policy reform and community impact, including evidence submissions to Australian coroners to prevent drug-related deaths.
Barratt has supervised 8 completed PhD students and currently co-supervises 2 more. She teaches research strategies and guest lectures on global crime. Her recent projects explore microdosing, drug markets, and sextortion phenomena. She serves on editorial boards for Drug and Alcohol Review and International Journal of Drug Policy, and advises ethics committees at RMIT.
Her research outputs span drug testing innovations, cryptomarket analysis, and substance use patterns. Key themes include drug adulteration, psychedelic effects, and culturally mediated drug use. She collaborates internationally to address drug-related public health challenges through policy advocacy and community engagement.
