Dr. Monica Jane Barratt is a social scientist at the Drug Policy Modelling Program within Australia's National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre at the University of New South Wales. She also holds adjunct positions as an Adjunct Fellow at the National Drug Research Institute, Curtin University, and a Visiting Fellow at the Burnet Institute.
Her research expertise spans digital drug culture and policy, with specialization in examining the social and public health implications of digital technologies for people who use illicit and emerging psychoactive substances. Key research areas include:
- Online drug markets (cryptomarkets)
- Internet communities discussing drug use
- Novel psychoactive substances
- Drug checking and pill testing services
- Drug policy reform initiatives
- Music festival and clubbing scenes related to drug use
Dr. Barratt serves as Associate/Deputy Editor for the International Journal of Drug Policy and Drug and Alcohol Review. She is the Australian Research Lead for the Global Drug Survey and Director of Research at Bluelight.org, an international drug harm-reduction community.
Funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council through both Early Career Fellowship and Project Grant schemes, her work bridges academic research with practical harm reduction applications. With over 15 years of research experience, she has published extensively across multiple formats including 178 journal articles, 9 book chapters, and 31 reports.
