Mitchell Thomas is a Professor of Theatre Arts at Westmont, specializing in Acting, Physical Theatre, Voice, Shakespeare, Clown, and Devised Theatre. He maintains dual roles as an academic and professional actor, with recent international performances in Armenia, Macedonia, Poland, and Italy. His work includes roles in King Lear, Uncle Vanya, and Hamlet, as well as producing Wallace Shawn’s The Fever in London. Mitchell has directed over 50 original works, winning multiple Indy Awards for directing (2024 Godspell, 2019 Pride and Prejudice, 2013 Electra). He is a member of AEA and SAG and has taught acting workshops globally. Mitchell holds an M.F.A. from the University of Washington and has conducted research residencies at Harvard and NYC’s Actor’s Center.

Research & Awards: Mitchell’s interests span actor training techniques (Alexander, Suzuki, Linklater), devised theatre, and cross-cultural performance. His awards include the 2008 Arlin G. Meyer Prize for innovative directing and multiple Indy Awards. His recent work emphasizes new play development and collaborations with institutions like the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.
Labs/Teams: Mitchell collaborates with Lit Moon Theatre Company, Ensemble Theatre Company of Santa Barbara, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. He advises Westmont’s film studies minor and directed its first feature film, A Winters Tale (interrupted).
