Michelle Smith is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology at McGill University's Faculty of Education. As a Red River Michif educator and filmmaker, she specializes in Indigenous education, decolonizing methodologies, and community-based research. She holds a PhD (C) in Education from McGill, an MA in Media Studies from Concordia University, and a BA in Anthropology from McGill.
Her research focuses on co-creating culturally responsive educational spaces through storytelling and participatory media. Notable projects include the First Peoples Post-Secondary Storytelling Exchange and an Inuit arts degree program in Nunavik. She has been recognized with the Vanier Scholarship (2021) and SSHRC's Community and College Social Innovation Fund (2016).
Smith is affiliated with the Mawachihitotaak Metis Thinkers Committee, Indigenous Community Table at Dawson College, and the Youth Network Chair Indigenous Stream. Her work bridges education, health, and cultural revitalization, emphasizing youth agency and Indigenous sovereignty in knowledge systems.
