Marianne A. Stenbaek is a Professor in Cultural Studies at McGill University’s Faculty of Arts, specializing in post-colonial Greenlandic and Nunavik literatures, decolonization, and Arctic Studies. She holds a Ph.D. in English from Université de Montréal and has been a leading scholar in Northern Indigenous research, advocating for Indigenous voices in academic and policy spheres. Currently on sabbatical, she has authored/co-edited over 15 books, including the Voices and Images of Nunavimmiut series, and curated major exhibitions like The Moravian Beginnings of Canadian Inuit Literature.
Her research focuses on Nunavimmiut writings, Inuit media education, and Arctic sovereignty. She has received prestigious awards, including the Governor-General’s Medal and Greenland’s Nersornaat Medal. Stenbaek has held leadership roles such as President of the Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies (ACUNS) and serves on the Inuit Center for Human Rights board. Her work bridges academia, policy, and community engagement, with grants from SSHRC, the Greenland Home Rule Government, and international organizations.
Key contributions include developing the Inuit Arctic Policy, digitalizing Inuit heritage materials, and fostering student exchanges. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates ethnography, translation, and public scholarship, exemplified in radio commentaries and Smithsonian Institution exhibits promoting Inuit cultural narratives.
