Roles & Affiliations: Dr. Michael Virata is an Associate Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine at Yale School of Medicine and serves as Director of HIV Clinical Services at Yale New Haven Hospital-Saint Raphael Campus. He also leads the HIV Care and Prevention Program at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
Education: MD from University of the Philippines School of Medicine (1989). Completed Internal Medicine residency at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore (1993) and dual fellowships in Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology at Yale School of Medicine (1994-1997).
Research Interests: Dr. Virata focuses on HIV/AIDS management, particularly in aging populations and reducing transmission through antiretroviral therapy (ART). His work emphasizes achieving the '95-95-95' global HIV eradication goals. He also investigates polypharmacy risks in HIV patients, anal cancer screening for men who have sex with men (MSM), and healthcare equity through initiatives like the Infectious Disease Diversity, Equity, and Antiracism (ID2EA) curriculum.
Publications: Over 15 peer-reviewed articles since 1996, with recent work addressing HIV-COVID-19 interactions, anal cancer prevention, and pharmacist-driven interventions for polypharmacy.
