Dr. Lydia Aoun-Barakat is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Section of Infectious Diseases at Yale School of Medicine. She serves as Director of the Yale Center for Infectious Diseases, overseeing ambulatory infectious disease services at Yale New Haven Hospital and Yale Medicine, which includes care for over 1,500 patients living with or at risk of HIV. Additionally, she is Program Director for the HIV Primary Care Training Track within the Yale Primary Care Residency Program, which she established in 2011, and serves as Associate Chair of Clinical Affairs.
Dr. Aoun-Barakat earned her medical degree from Lebanese University in 1994, completed residency at Griffin Hospital in 1998, and pursued fellowship training at Yale New Haven Hospital in 2000.

Her research focuses on HIV and aging, quality improvement in HIV care, and HIV workforce development. She examines immunological aspects of HIV infection in older adults and implements strategies for HIV prevention and treatment. Dr. Aoun-Barakat is deeply committed to addressing health disparities through her ID2EA (Infectious Disease Diversity, Equity, and Antiracism) initiatives. Her work spans clinical care, epidemiology, immunology, and health services with consistent focus on improving outcomes for people living with HIV.
Dr. Aoun-Barakat's recent publications demonstrate strong focus on HIV care in aging populations, comorbidities, and emerging infectious threats. Her work spans anal cancer screening in men who have sex with men with HIV, mpox vaccination impact, and HIV-substance use disorder intersections. She investigates health equity, telehealth implementation during the pandemic, and diversity curriculum development in infectious diseases, consistently addressing practical aspects of HIV care delivery and quality improvement.
Dr. Aoun-Barakat has received numerous awards recognizing her contributions:

Dr. Aoun-Barakat is deeply committed to mentoring residents, fellows, and students in national presentations and clinical research. She established the HIV Primary Care Training Track, instrumental in developing HIV workforce capacity. Her grant portfolio includes multiple HRSA and CDC awards dedicated to enhancing HIV care services and quality, with focus on outcome measures. She serves as Principal Investigator for the New England AIDS Education and Training Center, CT regional partner site, expanding her impact on HIV education nationally.
Dr. Aoun-Barakat leads the Yale Center for Infectious Diseases, providing comprehensive care for HIV, general infectious diseases, and transplant-related infections. She is involved with the HIV & Aging Center for Implementation Science, Malaysian Implementation Science Training (MIST) Program, Yale Ryan White Program, and Yale HIV Neuro Group. Her work connects with multiple clinical and research initiatives focused on implementation science in HIV care.
