Amit Achhra, MD, PhD, MPH is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases at Yale School of Medicine. He serves as Co-Director of the Yale HIV TT Primary Care Residency Program and is actively involved in clinical care, research, and teaching in the field of infectious diseases, with a particular focus on HIV care and implementation science.
Dr. Achhra completed his medical training at K J Somaiya Medical College, Maharashtra University of Health Sciences in India. He earned his PhD from the Kirby Institute/University of New South Wales in Australia, where he conducted epidemiological studies in HIV/AIDS. He also holds an MPH from the University of Wollongong. His clinical training includes an internal medicine residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and a fellowship in infectious diseases/HIV at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard University.
Dr. Achhra's research primarily focuses on implementation science in HIV care, with particular emphasis on optimizing treatment strategies for people living with HIV. His work examines the long-term impacts of antiretroviral therapy, kidney health in HIV-positive individuals, anal cancer screening in men who have sex with men with HIV, and STI prevention strategies. He has been actively involved in several major research initiatives including the HIV & Aging Center for Implementation Science and the Malaysian Implementation Science Training (MIST) Program.
His recent publications (2022-2024) demonstrate a strong focus on practical implementation of HIV care guidelines, with particular attention to kidney health outcomes, anal cancer screening effectiveness, and optimizing antiretroviral therapy timing. His work often bridges clinical care with public health implementation, emphasizing how evidence-based practices can be effectively translated into real-world settings across diverse populations.

As an educator, Dr. Achhra trains residents and fellows at Yale in infectious diseases and HIV medicine. He also serves as an educator faculty with the Connecticut Department of Public Health and the Sylvie Ratelle STD/HIV Prevention Training Center. His clinical work focuses on HIV primary care, complex HIV cases with resistance history, sexually transmitted infections, and COVID-19 therapeutics. He is actively involved in several committees and advisory boards, including serving as Chair of the STI Clinical Advisory Board and Co-Founder of the Clinical Advisory Team of Connecticut Sexual Health Coalition.
Dr. Achhra is a key member of Yale's Infectious Diseases division, contributing to multiple research initiatives including the HIV & Aging Center for Implementation Science and the Yale Ryan White Program. His work bridges clinical care with implementation science, focusing on how to effectively translate research findings into practical healthcare solutions for people living with HIV and other infectious diseases.
