معرفی
Andrew Grulich is a Scientia Professor at the University of New South Wales' Kirby Institute, where he has worked since 1995. An internationally renowned authority in HIV epidemiology, he specializes in the transmission and prevention of HIV and sexually transmissible infections (STIs), and the epidemiological relationship between immune deficiency, infection and cancer. His work has been central to Australia's HIV prevention policy development through state and federal ministerial advisory committees.
Professor Grulich earned his MBBS from Adelaide University (1986), MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (1990), and PhD in HIV-associated cancer epidemiology from UNSW (1998). He is a medical epidemiologist and Public Health Physician (FAFPHM, 1995), and was elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences in 2015.
His research focuses on two primary areas: HIV/STI transmission and prevention in homosexual men (particularly biomedical and behavioral prevention strategies), and the intersection between infection, immune function, and cancer (with emphasis on HPV-related anal cancer). His work spans epidemiological methods, cancer epidemiology, HIV/AIDS, infectious diseases, and immunology. Professor Grulich's recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on anal cancer screening methodologies, PrEP implementation science, and international collaborations examining HIV/STI epidemiology across diverse cultural contexts. His research increasingly addresses implementation questions for translating findings into public health practice, with significant work on self-collection techniques, adherence measurement, and service delivery models.
- Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (2015)
- Fellow of the Australian Faculty of Public Health Medicine, Royal Australasian College of Physicians (1995)
- Member of International AIDS Society Governing Council
- Past president of Australasian Society for HIV Medicine
Through his leadership at the Kirby Institute, Professor Grulich has mentored numerous researchers in HIV epidemiology and prevention. His work has been supported by multiple NHMRC grants and other international funding bodies. He has been centrally involved in Australia's successful HIV prevention efforts for over two decades, contributing to the country's global leadership in HIV control.
Professor Grulich leads the HIV Epidemiology and Prevention Program at the Kirby Institute, which conducts research on HIV transmission dynamics, prevention strategies, and the relationship between HIV, immune function, and cancer. His team collaborates extensively with clinical services, public health units, and community organizations to ensure research addresses real-world prevention needs.
