Cristina Brickman, MD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), specializing in the Division of Infectious Diseases. She joined UCSF in 2015 as an Assistant Clinical Professor and currently practices at the 360 Wellness Center, the Infectious Diseases Faculty Practice, and the Moffitt-Long Hospital inpatient consultation service. Her research focuses on the interplay between HIV infection and malignancies, particularly anal cancer prevention in people living with HIV (PLWH). Dr. Brickman leads efforts at the UCSF Anal Neoplasia Clinic for Research and Education to understand mechanisms of anal cancer development in immunocompromised populations. She has extensive training in clinical epidemiology and infectious diseases, with a strong background in HIV/AIDS research, HPV infections, and oncology. Her work bridges clinical practice, epidemiology, and public health, addressing critical gaps in cancer prevention and management among PLWH.
Education and Training:
- Medical Doctor (2007) – Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons
- Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Immunology (2002) – McGill University
- Internal Medicine Residency (2010) – New York Presbyterian Hospital – Columbia University Medical Center
- Infectious Diseases Fellowship (2014) – Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
- Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology (2015) – University of Pennsylvania
Research Interests: Dr. Brickman's research emphasizes HIV-associated malignancies, HPV pathogenesis, anal cancer screening strategies, and the impact of immunosuppression on cancer outcomes. She has published extensively on topics such as HPV infection dynamics in transplant recipients, anal dysplasia mechanisms, and clinical interventions for high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions.
Recent Publications Overview: Her recent work (2024) includes studies on anal cancer risk in men who have sex with men, the role of the anal microbiome in precancerous lesions, and screening challenges in liver transplant recipients. Earlier publications highlight her contributions to understanding HIV-associated cancer epidemiology and HPV management in immunocompromised patients.
Professional Contributions: Dr. Brickman actively participates in clinical trials, multidisciplinary survivorship care models, and guideline development for anal cancer prevention. She advocates for improved medical education on infection control and physician well-being in academic settings.
