Dr. Michael Lane is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Worcester since August 2023, following roles as a Lecturer at Newman University and a visiting lecturer at Birmingham City University. He teaches on LLB and LLM programs, leading modules such as Employment Law, Equity and Trusts, Public Law, and Human Rights. Additionally, he serves as the research lead for the School of Law and co-convenor of the Public Law Section of the Society of Legal Scholars with Dr. Chris Monaghan.
Education: Michael holds an LLB, an LLM in International Human Rights, and a PhD in Law from Birmingham City University. He also earned a PGCert in Research Practice and trained at the Geneva Academy for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights. He is SEDA-accredited and pursuing a Fellowship with Advance HE (formerly HEA).
Research Interests: Michael’s work focuses on international human rights mechanisms, particularly the UN Universal Periodic Review (UPR), constitutional law, and public law. His PhD provided groundbreaking analysis of the UK’s engagement with the UPR, influencing institutional REF submissions and UN advocacy. He actively contributes to human rights research via publications, expert reports, and consultancy for civil society organizations through the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
Teaching & Professional Activities: His teaching spans criminal law, contract law, and legal research methods. He integrates practical advocacy skills into his curriculum, reflecting his engagement with UN human rights processes. Professional memberships include SEDA and the Society of Legal Scholars.
Grants & Consultancy: Michael co-led a successful bid for consultancy and training services for civil society organizations via the Equality and Human Rights Commission. His research has informed parliamentary evidence and Select Committee submissions.
Labs/Teams: He is affiliated with the School of Law’s research initiatives and collaborates with the Public Law Section of the Society of Legal Scholars.
