Michael Kirby AC CMG is an Adjunct Professor at Victoria Law School, Victoria University, and holds multiple honorary academic appointments across Australian institutions including Australian National University, Bond University, University of Newcastle, University of New South Wales, and University of Tasmania. A former Judge of the High Court of Australia (1996-2009), he currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of The Laws of Australia and Commissioner of the UN DP Global Commission on HIV and the Law.
His educational background includes a BA, LLB, BeC, and LLM (First Class Honours) from the University of Sydney. Professor Kirby remains highly active in international human rights advocacy and legal scholarship despite retiring from the judiciary.
Professor Kirby's research centers on international human rights law, constitutional jurisprudence, and justice systems, with significant contributions to HIV/AIDS legal frameworks through his UN Commission role. His work bridges academic legal theory with practical human rights advocacy on global platforms.
