Megan Staples is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education, affiliated with the Department of Mathematics. She holds a Ph.D. (2004) and MA (1999) in Mathematics Education from Stanford University, and a BA (1992) in Mathematics from Brown University.
Her research focuses on collaborative inquiry, classroom discourse, and equitable teaching practices in secondary mathematics education. She has led or co-led multiple NSF-funded projects advancing mathematics education equity and teacher development, including the JAGUAR project (2009–2013) and the Connecticut Noyce Math Teachers Leaders Program (2020). Staples emphasizes student-centered approaches to mathematical justification and democratic participation in classrooms.
Her publications explore topics such as the MinD Lesson Model for democratic dialogues, sociomathematical reasoning, and teacher evaluations of student arguments. She has received awards including the Betsy Carter Memorial Award (2019) and the Robert A. Rosenbaum Award (2016).
Staples serves on committees like the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and chairs the Associated Mathematics Teacher Educators in Connecticut (AMTEC). She teaches courses on secondary mathematics methods and curriculum design.
