Janine M. Firmender is a Professor and Chair of the Teacher Education Department at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She specializes in Early Childhood/Elementary education (grades pre-k–4) and elementary mathematics education. Her research focuses on engaging students in mathematical writing and supporting mathematically talented students. She co-led the Elementary Mathematical Writing Task Force (2015), funded by a National Science Foundation grant.
Dr. Firmender holds a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology with a concentration in Gifted Education from the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut. She is an active member of professional organizations, including the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC), and serves as Chair of NAGC’s Computers and Technology Network. She has also contributed to the NAGC Advisory Board for Teaching for High Potential.
Her work bridges educational psychology, gifted education, and STEM, emphasizing practical applications in classroom settings. She has been recognized for her leadership in curriculum development and teacher training.
