Richard L. Schwab is the Raymond Neag Endowed Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Connecticut’s Neag School of Education. He served as dean of the Neag School from 1997-2009 and again from 2014-2021, becoming its longest-serving dean. With over four decades of experience, Schwab has held leadership roles at Drake University and the University of New Hampshire before returning to his alma mater UConn. He holds a B.S. in Social Studies Education from Boston University (1974), and M.A. and Ph.D. in Educational Administration from UConn (1978, 1980).
His research focuses on educational leadership, strategic planning, teacher preparation, and international school reform. Notable achievements include securing a historic $21M endowed gift for the Neag School, elevating its national ranking to #21 by U.S. News, and establishing programs across UConn’s branch campuses. He led major initiatives like the University’s five-year strategic plan and the Gentry Hall renovation.
Dr. Schwab’s national leadership includes roles as AACTE Connecticut chapter president, CADREI New Deans Seminar instructor, and member of the National Commission on Teaching America’s Future. Internationally, he advised educational reforms in Qatar, UAE, Russia, Ireland, South Africa, and Saudi Arabia. His awards recognize research excellence in teacher education and occupational stress management.
Key contributions include co-editing 'Portrait of a Profession: Teaching and Teachers in the 21st Century' and authoring works on educational technology and burnout measurement. He remains active in policy advocacy through Connecticut’s CommPACT Schools alliance and legislative task forces addressing teacher evaluation and higher education financing.
