Professor Mat Upton, based at the University of Plymouth's School of Biomedical Sciences, is a leading figure in medical microbiology. He leads the Antibiotic Resistant Pathogens Research Group and serves as Associate Head of School for research strategy.

His research focuses on combating antibiotic resistance through natural discovery, including:
- Deep-sea sponge microbiomes (collaboration with Kerry Howell)
- Novel antimicrobial peptides from human skin bacteria
- Epidermicin development for MRSA treatment
- Marine biodiversity exploration with robotic systems
- One Ocean Hub initiatives for global health
As Chief Scientific Officer of Amprologix, he has secured a £1.2 million contract from the Department for Health and Social Care to develop new antibiotics. His team has identified epidermicin through skin microbiome studies and is evaluating its clinical potential.
