Mathew Upton is Professor of Medical Microbiology at the University of Plymouth's School of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Health. He leads the Antibiotic Resistant Pathogens Research Group and founded the spin-out company Amprologix. Upton holds a PhD in Microbial Ecology and has over 20 years of research experience in international institutions. His research focuses on combating antimicrobial resistance through novel antibiotic discovery, with particular emphasis on marine biodiscovery from deep-sea sponges and antimicrobial peptide development.
Research interests span medical microbiology, antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, bacterial genomics, and novel therapeutic development. His publications demonstrate consistent focus on innovative solutions for multidrug-resistant pathogens, with recent work exploring Antarctic bacteria, hospital infection control, and vaccine development. Upton's work combines fundamental research with translational applications in clinical microbiology.
He directs an extensive research program with current projects including the £1.2 million Department of Health-funded antibiotic development initiative and the One Ocean Hub exploring marine natural products. Upton has supervised over 30 PhD students and 70 MSc projects, with current advisees working on novel antimicrobial discovery, diagnostic development, and infection models. His team collaborates with UKHSA, NHS Trusts, and international partners to address global health challenges posed by antibiotic-resistant pathogens.
