Sean Kelly is a PhD student and Researcher in Microbial Genomics at the School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Plymouth, affiliated with the Antimicrobial Resistant Pathogens Research Group under Prof. Mathew Upton. His research focuses on bacterial species with inherent antimicrobial resistance, including Mycobacterium abscessus and emerging Gram-negative pathogens (Cupriavidus, Ralstonia, Pandoraea), particularly in cystic fibrosis patients. He investigates virulence traits, antimicrobial susceptibility, and novel treatment efficacy using in vitro models. Collaborations include Dr. Jonathan Cox’s Lab at Aston University and clinicians from the Manchester Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre. His work is funded by the Boomer Esiason Foundation and University of Plymouth donations.
- Education: PhD student at University of Plymouth
Research interests center on overcoming therapeutic challenges posed by drug-resistant bacteria, addressing gaps in clinical guidance for emerging pathogens. Teaching roles include supporting Microbiology, Immunology, and Anatomy & Physiology modules as a Teaching & Support Assistant.
Current projects emphasize translating genomic and phenotypic insights into actionable strategies for improving patient outcomes, particularly in vulnerable populations like those with cystic fibrosis.
