Dr. Josie Bryant is a Group Leader at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, affiliated with the University of Cambridge. She directs the Bryant Group, focusing on genomic investigations of respiratory microbiomes in chronic lung diseases like cystic fibrosis and COPD. Her team integrates metagenomics, metabolomics, and single-cell transcriptomics to study microbial evolution, host-pathogen interactions, and therapeutic targets.
Bryant holds a First-Class B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Bath and a PhD from the Wellcome Sanger Institute. Her career includes postdoctoral work at the University of Cambridge and University College London, supported by a Henry Wellcome Research Fellowship. She leads collaborations with Addenbrookes Hospital, Papworth Hospital, and global research networks.
Research Interests: Bryant's work explores how respiratory pathogens evolve in chronic lung conditions, emphasizing Mycobacterium abscessus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa adaptation. She develops novel bioinformatic tools for tracking microbial genomic changes and translating findings into clinical diagnostics. Her lab also studies microbiome-host interactions across lung microenvironments.
Bryant's publications emphasize genomic epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance, and pathogen evolution. Recent work reveals trends in mycobacterial transmission networks, viral preadaptation mechanisms, and within-host pathogen diversity. Her studies consistently integrate clinical data with genomic innovations to improve patient outcomes.
Awards:
- Henry Wellcome Research Fellowship (2014-2017)
Leadership: She mentors PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. Her group partners with clinical teams to develop biomarkers and therapeutic strategies for chronic respiratory diseases.
