Andreas Peschel is a Professor of Microbiology at the Interfaculty Institute of Microbiology and Infection Medicine Tübingen (IMIT), University of Tübingen, where he heads the Department of Infection Biology. He serves as the spokesperson for the Cluster of Excellence CMFI (Controlling Microbes to Fight Infections).
Dr. Peschel studied biology at the universities of Bochum and Tübingen, earning his doctorate in microbiology from Tübingen in 1995. After postdoctoral positions with Friedrich Götz in Tübingen and at the University of Utrecht, he became a junior research group leader before being appointed Professor of Cellular and Molecular Microbiology at the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hygiene in 2003. Since 2008, he has held his current position at IMIT.
Peschel's research focuses on bacterial interactions within microbiomes, particularly in the nose and skin, and how these microbes interact with their human hosts. His work centers on Staphylococcus aureus and its interactions during both asymptomatic nasal colonization and active infection. A key area of investigation involves teichoic acids, the cell wall components of gram-positive bacteria, and the mechanisms S. aureus uses to evade host defenses. His research has led to the discovery of novel antibiotic substances including Epifadin (produced by S. epidermidis) and Lugdunin (produced by S. lugdunensis), both effective against MRSA.
Analysis of Peschel's recent publications reveals a strong focus on microbial competition within human microbiomes, particularly how commensal bacteria produce antimicrobial compounds to inhibit pathogens like S. aureus. His work bridges fundamental microbiology with therapeutic applications, exploring how understanding these natural microbial interactions can lead to new approaches for combating antibiotic-resistant infections. Key themes include bacterial adaptation strategies, host-pathogen interactions, and the ecological dynamics of microbial communities.
- Prize of the German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology (2010)
- Emil von Behring Prize (2022)
- Member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (2022)
As spokesperson for the CMFI Cluster of Excellence, Peschel leads a major interdisciplinary research initiative focused on understanding and controlling microbial infections. His work has attracted significant funding for projects investigating novel antimicrobial approaches, including clinical trials of phage lysin compounds like HY-133. His research group collaborates extensively with other leading scientists in microbiology, immunology, and infectious disease research, contributing to both fundamental understanding and translational applications in the fight against antibiotic-resistant pathogens.
Peschel maintains an active laboratory investigating staphylococcal biology, with particular emphasis on nasal colonization mechanisms, teichoic acid biochemistry, and bacterial evasion of antimicrobial defense systems. His team works at the intersection of basic microbiology and clinical applications, developing novel strategies to prevent and treat bacterial infections through manipulation of the human microbiome.
