Mary Jean Hande is an Assistant Professor in the Sociology Department at Trent University, affiliated with Otonabee College. She holds a B.A. from the University of Saskatchewan, an M.A. from York University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on care policy, aging, disability justice, migrant labor, and community-engaged methodologies.
Key projects include leading a SSHRC Partnership Engagement Grant ($24,686) to reform Ontario’s home care system through disability and migrant justice frameworks, and a SSHRC Insight Development Grant ($64,840) examining im/migrant home care workers during the pandemic. She co-leads a UBC Press book project with Janice Keefe, prioritizing essential voices in long-term care research.
Teaching includes courses on health sociology, classical theory, aging, and sociological analysis. Her work bridges academia and activism, emphasizing participatory approaches with organizations like the Disability Justice Network of Ontario and Migrante Manitoba. Notable contributions include policy guidance for long-term care staff and advocacy for caregiving justice in Canada.
Research collaborations span national and international partners, addressing systemic inequities in care provision. She actively publishes in journals like Antipode, Canadian Journal of Sociology, and Disability & Society, focusing on critical theory and qualitative methods.
