Mary Frances Luce is the Interim Dean and Robert A. Ingram Professor of Business Administration at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. She is notable for being both the first woman to serve as Fuqua's dean and the first Fuqua alumnus to hold this position. With a 30-year career specializing in behavioral marketing, Professor Luce has made significant contributions to understanding how emotions influence decision-making processes, particularly in healthcare contexts.
Professor Luce earned her Ph.D. in business administration with a concentration in marketing from Duke University's Fuqua School of Business in 1994, following a bachelor's degree from Ball State University in 1989. Before returning to Fuqua as faculty in 2004, she spent ten years on the faculty of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Professor Luce's research focuses on consumer behavior and medical decision-making, with particular emphasis on how emotions impact patients' healthcare decisions. Her work spans multiple domains including behavioral marketing, health care marketing, and the psychological aspects of consumer choices. She has published extensively in top journals such as Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Consumer Psychology, and Journal of Marketing Research, examining topics ranging from emotional trade-off difficulty to voluntary consent in medical decision-making.
Analysis of Professor Luce's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on the intersection of emotion and decision-making, with increasing attention to healthcare contexts in later years. Her work demonstrates strong methodological diversity, employing experimental, survey, and field research approaches. A notable trend is her exploration of how specific emotions (rather than general positive/negative affect) differentially influence consumer judgments and choices. Her research has significant practical implications for healthcare providers, marketers, and policy makers seeking to understand and improve consumer decision processes.
Professor Luce has received recognition for her scholarly contributions, including:
- JCR Ferber Award from the National Journal of Consumer Research (1998)
Professor Luce has secured significant research funding for her work, demonstrating the importance and impact of her research agenda:
- Neural Compensation and Economic Decision Making in Aging Research (Co-Investigator, National Institutes of Health, 2007-2010)
- Developing a Measure of Voluntary Consent for Protocol-Based Treatment Decision Research (Principal Investigator, National Science Foundation, 2006-2009)
Throughout her career, Professor Luce has demonstrated strong academic leadership beyond her research contributions. She previously served as Fuqua's associate and senior associate dean of faculty for six years, and as associate vice president of Research & Innovation at Duke. Currently, in addition to her deanship at Fuqua, she serves on the Board of Trustees of Duke Kunshan University, having previously spent a year as DKU's interim executive vice chancellor. Her commitment to interdisciplinary research is evident in her role as a Bass Connections Faculty Team Member for "Age Differences in Economic Decision-making" (2013-2014).
