A/Prof Mary Coupland is an Associate Professor and Visiting Fellow at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), holding academic positions within the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences under the Faculty of Science. She has held roles including Director of the Mathematics Study Centre and Senior Lecturer at UTS, with extensive experience in mathematics education spanning over four decades. Her research focuses on curriculum development, mastery learning, and improving mathematics education at tertiary and secondary levels. She has contributed to national curriculum reforms and teacher professional development programs.
Dr. Coupland’s educational background includes a PhD from the University of Wollongong, an MEd and BSc from the University of Sydney, and a DipEd. She has received awards such as the UTS Distinguished Service Award (2024) and Exceptional Service Award (2020), recognizing her contributions to mathematics education and teacher advocacy. She is an honorary life member of the Mathematical Association of New South Wales and served as President of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (2014–2016).
Her research interests emphasize innovative teaching methods, student engagement in mathematics, and the transition from secondary to tertiary education. She leads projects like the 'Maths Inside' initiative, which connects mathematics to real-world applications to enhance student interest. Her funded research includes studies on teacher upskilling and mathematics curriculum modernization.
