Katherine Bates is a lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, where she has worked since 2019. She previously held academic positions at Western Sydney University (2015–2018) and the University of Wollongong (2009–2018). Her PhD (2015) and MEd (2008) from Wollongong, along with a B.Ed from St George Institute of Education (1983), underpin her expertise in teacher education.
Her research focuses on curriculum and pedagogy, particularly in literacy education, place-based learning, and Indigenous pedagogies. She explores how Aboriginal teachers navigate policy compliance and cultural resistance, as well as how environmental immersion enhances reading instruction.
