Mark Russell Smith is Associate Professor and Artistic Director of Orchestral Studies at the University of Minnesota. His combined role with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra allows him to bridge professional performance with academic leadership. A graduate of Juilliard School (cello) and Curtis Institute of Music (conducting), Smith has revitalized orchestras in Richmond and Springfield through innovative programming.
His research focuses on reinventing classical repertoire and expanding orchestral accessibility through technology. Recent projects include the Britten Peace Project, which integrated historical study with performances of War Requiem across Europe and America. Smith champions contemporary works through initiatives like Engine 408 series and international piano-e-competitions.
Honors include:
- First Prize, National Repertory Orchestra Conductors Competition
- Marian Anderson Prize
He regularly conducts major orchestras worldwide and mentors emerging artists through touring collaborations with institutions like Curtis Institute.
