Mark McCann is a Research Fellow at the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit, University of Glasgow, leading the 'Peers and social networks' workstream within the relationships and health programme.
His research centers on mental health, substance use, and social network dynamics, with specific investigations into how social networks influence adolescent health behaviors, factors driving novel psychoactive substance use, and individual-level changes in alcohol consumption following Scotland's minimum unit pricing policy. Recent work examines COVID-19 disruptions to support networks for substance users.
McCann actively contributes to the Scottish Alcohol Research Network (SARN), participating in initiatives like the SARN Early Career Researchers Conference and Alcohol Occasionals. His projects include N-of-1 studies on alcohol consumption and pandemic-related network disruption analyses.
He directs the 'Peers and social networks' workstream, focusing on social connections' role in health outcomes through the University of Glasgow's public health research infrastructure.
