Professor Carol Emslie is Co-Chair of the Scottish Alcohol Research Network (SARN) and leads the Substance Use Research Group (@SubMisuseGcu) at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU). She joined GCU in 2012 and directs the ReaCH Crucible programme for early-career researchers. Her work focuses on gender, identity, and alcohol use, with a lifecourse perspective on harm reduction.
Carol’s research includes qualitative studies of drinking in LGBTQ+ communities, alcohol/tobacco environments, and the impact of minimum unit pricing on homeless populations. She translates findings into infographics and social media campaigns (#dontpinkmydrink) to counter gendered alcohol marketing. Her projects are funded by ESRC, CSO, and SHAAP. Carol also serves as Assistant Editor at Addiction and contributes to expert policy groups.
Key trends in her recent publications include digital alcohol marketing, managed alcohol programmes, and stakeholder views on policy priorities. She emphasizes gender-responsive interventions and qualitative methods to address health disparities.
Carol graduated with a First Class Honours in Sociology from Glasgow University and earned her PhD from the MRC Social & Public Health Sciences Unit. Her early work explored gender differences in morbidity and health perceptions in families with heart disease, and she has contributed to immunization studies in Traveller Communities.
