Dr. Emily Long is a Research Fellow at the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit (SPHSU) within the University of Glasgow’s College of Social Sciences. Her research focuses on social networks, health outcomes, and loneliness in young people. She holds a PhD in Psychology from Utah State University and previously held an MRC Skills Development Fellowship (2018-2021).
Dr. Long’s work examines mechanisms linking social relationships to health (e.g., substance use, mental health) and how health influences social networks. She also investigates interventions leveraging social networks for behavior change. Her loneliness research explores risk factors, mental health dynamics, and implications for wellbeing among adolescents. Key grants include the MRC-funded “Only the Lonely” project (2022-2025) and the UKRI-funded SOCITS initiative (2022-2025).
