Mark Bradford is the E.H. Harriman Professor of Soils and Ecosystem Ecology at Yale University's School of the Environment (YSE), within The Forest School. His research focuses on soil health, carbon storage dynamics, and the impacts of environmental change on ecosystems. He holds a B.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Exeter and the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology in the UK.
Bradford's work spans applied ecology in managed forests, carbon cycle-climate feedbacks, and soil carbon dynamics in agricultural systems. He emphasizes quantitative approaches to link soil processes to societal and environmental outcomes. His lab, located at the Greeley Memorial Lab, explores topics like urban forest carbon density, microbial interactions, and soil carbon measurement methodologies.
Teaching includes courses such as 'Soil Science,' 'Ecosystem Science,' and 'Synthesizing Science for Policy and Practice.' He actively advises doctoral students and collaborates with institutions like the Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture and the Yale Applied Science Synthesis Program (YASSP).
Recent publications highlight urban forest carbon storage, agricultural soil management protocols, and microbial drivers of methane emissions. His research aims to inform sustainable land-use policies and climate mitigation strategies.
