Stephen Wood is an Associate Research Scientist and Lecturer at the Yale School of the Environment (YSE) and a Senior Scientist for Agriculture & Food Systems at The Nature Conservancy (TNC). His work focuses on soil carbon cycling, agronomic benefits, and environmental conservation, particularly through TNC's agriculture strategies. He leads initiatives like the AgEvidence data platform analyzing conservation agriculture impacts in the US Corn Belt.
Wood holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University (2015), an M.E.Sc. from YSE (2011), and a B.A. from The George Washington University (2006). His research bridges soil science, climate change, and sustainable agriculture, emphasizing practical applications for conservation and food security.
Key areas of expertise include carbon sequestration, regenerative agriculture, and socio-technical innovation for agri-food systems. He has contributed to global studies on natural climate solutions, biodiversity co-benefits, and nitrogen fertilizer mitigation strategies.
Wood’s scientific awards include the NatureNet Science Fellowship (with TNC and YSE). His work on farmer-led experiments in cover crops demonstrates soil health improvements, and he collaborates on projects like the SNAPP working group to set soil management targets for conservation goals.
He is based at the Greeley Memorial Lab in New Haven, CT, with offices and labs focused on advancing interdisciplinary research at the nexus of environment and agriculture.
