Evan S. Kane is a Professor at Michigan Technological University (MTU) affiliated with the Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC). His primary appointment is in the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Science. He holds a PhD in Forest Ecology from University of Alaska Fairbanks, MS in Forestry from MTU, and BS in Applied Ecology and Environmental Science from MTU.
Research focuses on nutrient dynamics in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, particularly soil carbon storage hotspots in boreal ecosystems, peatlands, and temperate forests. Key interests include decomposition processes, dissolved organic carbon dynamics, and ecosystem responses to disturbances like wildfire and flooding. He emphasizes experimental approaches involving natural and human-induced disturbances to study ecosystem resilience.
Recent publications (2024) highlight work on microbial biofilm impacts on CO₂ emissions, boreal fen greening under CO₂ fertilization, mine waste utilization in soil amendments, and permafrost thaw effects on methane isotope values. His interdisciplinary research spans ecology, biogeochemistry, and climate science.
Advises students including MD Russell and G Boyle. Active in collaborative networks involving USDA Northern Research Station and international institutions. Current work explores climate change impacts on northern ecosystems and sustainable soil management strategies.
