Mark Barton is a Professor in Geosciences at the University of Arizona and Co-Director of the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources (IMR), a state-, industry-, and privately-funded interdisciplinary organization spanning science, engineering, public health, and policy related to mineral resources.
Education:
- PhD in Geophysical Sciences, University of Chicago
- MS in Geological Sciences, Virginia Tech
- BS in Geological Sciences, Virginia Tech
Dr. Barton's research spans energy and mass transfer in the Earth's lithosphere with applications to mineral deposits. His work focuses on various ore deposit types including porphyry, IOCG, sediment-hosted Cu-Co-Ag and U-V, and precious metal systems. He also investigates geochemistry, petrology, and dynamics of geologic systems such as arc-related magmatism, metamorphism, subduction zones, extensional tectonics, and fluid processes in sedimentary basins.
Dr. Barton has directed the Center for Mineral Resources for 15 years and co-founded the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources. His research has been supported by:
- US National Science Foundation
- Science Foundation Arizona
- Keck Foundation
and involves collaboration with mining companies and the USGS.
He co-directs the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources, which serves as a hub for interdisciplinary research and education in mineral resources.
