Mariann Hardey serves as an Associate Professor at Durham University Business School and acts as the Durham Principal Investigator for the Creative Fuse North East project across both Fuse 1.0 and 2.0 iterations. She maintains dual affiliation with the university through her role in the Advanced Research Computing Directorate.
Her research critically examines technology's societal impact through lenses of digital identity transformation, professional tech culture, and systemic inequalities. She investigates how AI, social media, robotics, and biomedicine reshape human identity and social conditions, with current focus on self-tracking and mHealth applications involving automation and data-mining. Hardey actively advocates for moving beyond the 'women in tech' paradigm to drive cultural, policy, and career pathway changes, as articulated in her book The Culture of Women in Tech.
As project leader for Creative Fuse North East, Hardey directs initiatives spanning fusion research, knowledge exchange, sector analysis, and collaborative innovation. The project structure includes funded workshops, internships, consultancy services, and events addressing technology inequality through business interventions and interdisciplinary collaboration.
