Maria Sampen is a Professor of Violin at the University of Puget Sound, renowned for her multifaceted career as a concerto soloist, chamber musician, and educator. She specializes in eclectic repertoire spanning classical to avant-garde styles, performing at venues like Carnegie Hall and collaborating with composers such as William Bolcom and Bright Sheng. A passionate advocate for contemporary music, she has premiered works by Marilyn Shrude, David Glenn, and others. Sampen leads the Puget Sound Trio and previously participated in Brave New Works (2000–2020). She chairs the string department and teaches Aural Skills, String Pedagogy, and Applied Violin, mentoring students who excel in national competitions. Her pedagogical philosophy emphasizes student growth as both artists and global citizens.
