John Sampen is an Associate Teaching Professor of Saxophone and Distinguished Artist Professor at Bowling Green State University, coordinating the Woodwind Area. He is a leading concert saxophonist specializing in contemporary literature, having commissioned over 80 works and premiered pieces by composers like Babbitt and Subotnick. Sampen holds degrees from Northwestern University and has studied under Frederick Hemke, Donald Sinta, and Larry Teal.
Research & Performance: Focuses on contemporary saxophone repertoire, including collaborations with composers such as Cage and Rzewski. His London premiere of 'In Two Worlds' with the WX7 Wind Controller was critically acclaimed. Sampen regularly performs traditional saxophone repertoire with pianist Marilyn Shrude.
