Dr. Maria Lucia Silveira is a Professor and Soil Scientist at the University of Florida's Range Cattle Research and Education Center in Ona, FL. She leads the Soil and Water Science Program, focusing on nutrient cycling, water quality, and carbon dynamics in subtropical grasslands. Her research integrates 60% fundamental science and 40% extension outreach, addressing critical issues for the forage and cattle industries.
Her research interests center on sustainable land management, emphasizing:
- Nutrient cycling and water quality in grassland ecosystems
- Soil carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas mitigation
- Phosphorus transport reduction in enriched soils
- Bioenergy crop impacts on carbon stocks
- Optimization of fertilizer strategies for forage production
Recent publications (2023-2024) predominantly explore climate-smart agriculture, including carbon flux modeling, prescribed fire impacts on rangelands, biosolids regulation compliance, and manureshed management. Her work demonstrates consistent emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches combining soil science, agronomy, and environmental policy to enhance ecosystem resilience.
She directs field studies at the Range Cattle REC and collaborates extensively through initiatives like the Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) network. Current projects include bahiagrass nitrogen responses, ecosystem carbon stocks in grasslands, and biofuel crop impacts on greenhouse gases.
