Dr. Lynn Sollenberger is a Distinguished Professor and Graduate Coordinator in the Agronomy Department at the University of Florida's College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. His research focuses on plant-herbivore interactions, grassland ecosystem services, and sustainable livestock systems across 5.4 million acres of Florida grasslands.
Education:
- Ph.D. Agronomy, University of Florida (1985)
- M.S. Agronomy, Pennsylvania State University (1981)
- B.A. Biology, Messiah College (1979)
Research: He develops technologies to enhance ecosystem services (carbon sequestration, water purification) while reducing disservices (greenhouse gas emissions). His work integrates legumes into grasslands to minimize synthetic inputs and improve sustainability, with $6+ million in grants supporting 69 graduate students.
Publications: His 320+ refereed articles exhibit strong focus on nutrient cycling, legume-grass interactions, and climate-smart grazing systems. Recent work emphasizes water/nitrogen use efficiency, shade tolerance in forages, and biosolid regulations.
Awards:
- AAAS Fellow (2024)
- UF Teacher-Scholar of the Year (2024)
- Giant of Agricultural Progress (CSSA, 2017)
- UF Distinguished Teaching Scholar (2015)
- CSSA/ASA Fellow (2004/1998)
Leadership: Directs the Forage Evaluation Laboratory, mentors 17 tenure-track protégés, and hosts international scholars. Secured USDA-NIFA grants for grassland sustainability projects.
